Make the idea visible

A producer’s desk covered in storyboards is a useful image for the space between imagination and execution. An idea can feel complete in your head while remaining impossible for someone else to understand. The creative challenge is to make its shape visible.

In Built on Purpose, Nathan Allen Pirtle describes communication as a bridge between imagination and action. A vision needs a name, a structure, a plan, and a next step. Excitement alone cannot do that work.

Find the part that belongs to this idea

Before thinking about a huge deal or an entire creative universe, get specific. Who is the work for? What tension gives it energy? What makes the central character, perspective, or experience distinctive? What should someone feel after encountering it?

Originality becomes clearer through decisions. A mood is a beginning. A premise, an example, and a consistent point of view give collaborators something they can respond to. A short sample can reveal more than a long speech about potential.

Build something another person can discuss

Try reducing the idea to a page: the premise, the audience, the experience, and the first thing you can make. Then create that first thing. A scene, a sketch, a prototype, or a short piece of writing gives the conversation substance.

The imagined Hollywood office in this article celebrates the fun of a big vision. The practical lesson is quieter: do enough work that the next conversation can be about the idea itself. A pitch opens a conversation. Clear creative choices give it somewhere to go.
